PLAN B PRESS Issue

Jim Mancinelli

In 2004 we decided to publish Jim Mancinelli’s In Deep. This collection follows one person's spiritual journey with differing ways of seeing the world. Two poems from that book are reprinted here. In addition to his work in the Speech-Language field in Philadelphia, Mancinelli is the host of the Fishtown Airways poetry reading series in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia.

CHANNELING RUMI

At the edge of the world is a place where I am whole.
My limbs are not twisted into mathematical shapes
and my eyes are for seeing.
I am a creature of such beauty that my breath is the fire of stars
and my sex is the bliss of clear light.

At the edge of the world is a place of quiet acceptance.
My face is not contorted in anger, and I have integrated the holes.
I am a creature of such wisdom that my thoughts are empty
and my heart is full.

At the edge of the world is a place of tranquility.
My soul is at rest and my love moves outward.
I am a creature of purity and all of my being is stretched
to cover the earth and sky.

At the edge of the world I will spread my arms
and gather the universe into a perfect breath.
Only then will I know the mind of the still lily
and the peace of the Anointed.
