THE EVOLVING CITY

Kate Powell Shine

SKATERS

Swarming in a hive of Tyvek
coated with white vinyl siding
and honeycombed with glass
rectangles, they slam wooden planks
against the street, failed ollies
piling up under scraped skin.
A car growls up against them;
the mob stares with fifteen-
year-old haughtiness.
The car snarls louder; you
sound the horn. Cutting a sharp
angle with his chin, one of them
indicates: this parking space
has been acquired.
