THE WARTIME ISSUE
Melissa Tuckey
FORSYTHIA WINTER
First snap and daffodils nod off
they always look
so surprised
while here in D.C.
everything wants to bloom
at once a profusion
of highway exits
and war
I want off this crazy
interchange forward and back
illegal turns and still
the land refuses
Go ahead open your hand
what emptiness
will you offer
that wild impulse the rain
