The Flying Rock I
oil on canvas, 60" x 70"
Born in Calcutta, Sanjoy Das has been active as a painter since finishing his studies at the College of Visual Arts in 1984 (after having graduated from Calcutta University). He has participated in numerous exhibitions and workshops both in India and abroad--notably solo shows at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Calcutta in 1995 and at Tribeni Gallery in New Dehli in 1996. In 1991, he was part of an exchange program between Arts Interaction of Washington, DC and the ArtsAcre, an artist's colony from the Calcutta area. He spent a 1-month residency in Washington, and exhibited his works in a group show at the District of Columbia Arts Center.
Precariously balanced is the way I would describe my paintings. The sense of anxiety and the absurd in my sub conscious, as I respond to the hypocrisy which infects our social and politial order, gradually reveals itself in imagery which evolves from the real to the surreal. The rough texture of flying rocks against the smooth sky - rocks which can come down at any moment - creates a sort of anxiety. To me, paintings are not only the product of technique and intellect. They are also the sum of emotional vibrations resonating in a sensitive mind. I have used mainly mauve, brown, black, pink and blue in this series of painting.
