KATHY KELER
Computer/ Mixed Media Multiples
Derived from a series of paintings I began in 1997, these new prints continue my exploration into the possibilities of the computer image as an expressive form. They are a true synthesis of my 20 years of painting and 5 years of computer graphics experience. The medium is late 20th century, but I draw my inspiration mostly from medieval/ early renaissance art and from surrealism. In fact, the computer1s ability to revise infinitely, without cost, has encouraged my tendency to refine and polish an image over a long period of time. This kind of meditative development is usually associated with art from an earlier age.

The images start from high-res digital scans made from photographs of my paintings. I will sometimes combine a section of one painting with a section of another, perhaps altering their relative scale; or create a new element directly on the computer to use with one these sections. From then on I develop the image on the computer screen, using the paint and image-editing tools available in Photoshop. This stage takes place in small increments over a long period of time (usually several months) during which I output dozens of proofs and experiment with a variety of varnishes to bring out the painterly depth of the piece. For the final pieces, I apply the varnishes after spraying them with a uv-resistant clear spray; then the prints are archivally mounted on acid-free foamcor.
