THE EVOLVING CITY
Fannie H. Gray
BALLSTON
Piercing glint
yet brief
Already the sun is crowded out
they rise
dense
like a cloud of steel cicadas
light, once direct, pure
bounces in waves from window to beam to
my upturned face
wind, rustles through the newly wound tunnels
through me
and dies in the open street
Fannie H. Gray is the mother of two
young children who has lived in the Barcroft neighborhood of Arlington,
VA for 5 years.
